The results are in. For the 12 positions on Waverley Council, the progressive team including our 3 Labor plus 1 Labor Independent and 2 Greens,  won 6 council positions and the Liberals also won 6 positions. This meant that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor were drawn out of a hat. The Liberals’ Will Nemesh won the Mayoral position and Labor’s Dr Keri Spooner won the Deputy Mayor’s role. This gives the Liberals the balance of power on Council for the next 2 years. On Oct 15 2026, the same procedure will occur again with a hat draw for the final 2 years of the 4 year Council term.

Labor and Liberal have negotiated Committee roles, with Labor councillors taking up most Deputy Chair roles with the Liberals holding Chairperson roles. As we go to press, we await further information from the Liberals regarding proposed changes to some important Committees.
