First Council Meeting
This was our first Council meeting for the new term. It was held in the newly renovated Mill Hill Centre’s Cloud Room and this will be used as the new council chambers. There are many big issues that the new councillor’s will be facing, not the least of which is what to do with the old Council Chambers on Bondi Road, which are now closed. Staff have been moved to a number of buildings in Bondi Junction. The financial long-term plan of the Council will also require scrutiny and decisions to be made about ensuring the financial sustainability of the budgets into the future.
Supporting the Minns’ State Government Housing Reforms
Labor moved a motion for Council to set aside funds and begin planning a community information campaign about the impending Housing Reforms from the Minns State Government. The intention was to ensure that Council explained the changes in zoning and uplift to the whole LGA community to avoid misrepresentation and confusion. The Liberals voted against this motion but Labor did manage to get a concession that this would be revisited in the December meeting.
Supporting our Jewish Community’s safety
Councillors voted unanimously to support the safety of our community via the installation of high resolution CCTV cameras to prevent the ongoing spate of violent anit-semitic graffiti throughout our neighbourhoods. Further, a unanimous vote was carried to support the erection of a memorial for the victims of Oct 7 in Israel and this will be a joint project with Woollahra Council.
A Tribute to the Lucas Family
The recent deaths of well known and much loved Leo Lucas, founder of Lucas Meats and renowned for the best hams in Sydney (if not the world!) and his wonderful brother Father Nick Lucas OFM of Mary Immaculate Waverley and St Francis Paddington, followed by the untimely passing of Ben Lucas, teacher, surfer extraordinaire and loving husband and father, came as a shock and considerable grief for a great many people in the Waverley area.A touching and appropriate tribute was paid to the Lucas family at the commencement of the meeting.
